Long Bui is a Visiting Assistant Professor in American Studies at Wesleyan University. He received Ph.D in comparative Ethnic Studies with designated concentrations in gender/sexuality and media/cultural studies from the University of California, San Diego. He received his B.A. in Asian American Studies and Political Science from the University of California, Irvine.
As an interdisciplinary scholar and teacher, Bui’s work crosses numerous fields that involve the study of race, gender, sexuality, community/identity, neoliberal political economy, transnationalism, globalization, area studies (Southeast/East Asia), science and technology, visual culture, media communications, and history. Dr. Bui’s book manuscript, Returns of War (under contract with NYU Press), examines the problems of decolonization, sovereignty and recognition for Vietnamese people as a result of the collapse of the U.S. puppet regime, Combining qualitative social science and humanities methods, the book uses ethnography, digital texts, historical archives, literary criticism, filmic analysis, and oral history. Through refugees’ remembrance of a “vanished” country creates new possibilities for engaging imperial legacies and militarized political economies then and now.
His second book manuscript is a cultural history of the representation of Asians and other people of color as human machines. This is a feminist project that uses queer theory, disability theory, and American Studies methods to understand race from another perspective.
His past and forthcoming articles have appeared in journals such as Verge: Global Asian Studies, Journal of Asian American Studies; Culture, Society, & Masculinities; Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism; Feminist Media Studies; and positions: Asian critique.
His work has been supported by grants from various sources including: The University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship, the University of Illinois Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship, and UC Santa Barbara’s Center for New Racial Studies.
He has been elected into leadership positions as the chair of the Southeast Asian section of the Asian American Studies Association and currently editor-in-chief of the Vietnamese International Film Festival.
At Wesleyan, Dr. Bui is currently offering courses in Asian American History, Asian American Gender and Sexuality, Techno-Orientalism, Asian American Popular Culture, Comparative Asian-Latino/a Immigration.
